I’m looking for a one month hotel/condo rental in downtown Toronto for this summer for a good price. The cheaper the better.
Thanks!
In general the Toronto Star classifieds are the best rental ads for Toronto, and very easy to search online.
If you’re willing to sublet from a student, you might find good options through Craigslist or Kijiji, but may have to deal with roommates.
The places I describe below were all on a corporate budget, but there are a couple of links with a wider budget range and one place that I’d call cheap.
I’ve had good luck with Cambridge Suites – used them with a 3 year old in tow with excellent service and very convenient breakfast room included with stay. Have managed to get them for around $150 – 190 a night, depending on when. Suites generally have a bar fridge and sink so don’t expect to make meals. Excellent location for short walk to downtown core and access to Queen streetcar.
I stayed for a couple of weeks in the Delta Chelsea at Yonge and Gerrard. People will tell you the location is rough, but walk out the back door on to Bay Street and you’ll have a totally different stay than taking on Yonge Street. I stayed with a 2 year old, granted I’m from Toronto and know my city well. I like this location for subway, streetcar and walking access to tons of stuff including the core, ROM, Eaton Centre, Streetcars to great parks, etc. We had an apartment style room for about $220 a night, but with full kitchen, table, bedroom, great balcony, etc. Note – some rooms are tired and not pretty, but if you’re not entertaining these are totally comfortable.
Metro Luxury Suites seem to be a decent operation, but I’ve never used them.
Home Suite Home have a good range on prices – again, never used them but considered them.
Another place I’ve used it Glengrove Suites. Mixed results. We said no to the first place they gave us as it was filthy and we had a kid playing on the floor, but they switched us and it was okay. Good price, full condo, secure building. I think we paid 120 a night over Christmas/New Years 2006-7. Again, good location for transit access and the building was quiet.
The lowest price place I have stayed in was up near Avenue Road and Davenport, a good location for what I call north Toronto (anything north of Bloor is north to me) but it’s a downtown location, really. 138 Pears Ave. I have no idea who owns it now, but I found a link on Toronto.com. It was 2 star at best, but a really good deal at about $235 a week (summer 2000) for one person. Clean and safe, but not pretty. I used it after being in Asia for a few years while finding an apartment, ended up that my retired uncle was staying there, too while doing the same thing.
Start with TheStar to get an idea of options – consider summer sublets if you’re looking right now for short term.
If you’re new to T.O. enjoy! It’s a great city. Where you stay has mainly to do with your purpose in the city and your budget, but do your research as it’s a big, big city in terms of area and you can end up with a very long commute from the wrong condo. Use Google Maps to get an idea of time between places and get used to people in Toronto giving you distances in time, rather than miles/kms or blocks (e.g. it’ll take you 20 minutes on the subway and then a ten minute walk during rush hour).

I’m planning to take a vacation on the cape this summer. Which town has reasonable rental/hotel prices, as well as nice beaches, restaurants, and shopping?
That totally depends on what type of vacation you are looking for. The most economical area that is where most college and young adults go to is South Yarmouth right outside of Hyannis. There is a huge range of motels and hotels, with probably the most reasonbly priced motels on the Cape (some of which aren’t that bad either). And Sea Gull beach is a pretty decent beach. There’s TONS of restaurants, clubs and shops. The downside is you definitely get more of a party town atmosphere than a "sleepy beach town" feel. So depends what you want.
My personal fav is Eastham, farther down the Cape. When the above was no longer the peace I wanted in my down time I fell in love with this area. It’s quiet, with just enough good restaurants and places to go. The key is the National Seashore is there, annually ranked on top 10 beaches in the world and US and deservedly so.
To me PTown is a fun day outing. Unless I was part of the Gay/Lesbian community I don’t think I’d want a full vacation there. It’s sort of Greenwich Village/Cambridge MA with beaches. Fun people watching and shopping, wild "unusual" clubs, etc. Some stunning B&B’s though (Day’s End Inn is one of the most amazing places I’ve seen).
So there are 3 options to cover the biggies. Of course there are others. IE you could stay outside of S. Yarmouth if you want more quiet days and don’t mind driving a bit for the restaurants and nightlife. Like I say, I’d need to know more about what you want. But hope this gets you started with some good ideas!
Have a blast and be sure to go shopping at the Christmas Tree Shop…best store in the world, all over the Cape. Trust me you will thank me!!! (check ChristmasTreeShops.com to see a flyer and get ideas and locations).

Rates are higher since people aren’t traveling as much. I know it sounds stupid, but the car costs the company the same whether its rented out all week or just once. Try to compare everyone and be sure to try to get coupons and book early if possible.
Some of my clients like to rent out their beautiful homes when they go on vacation, and for the people that rents them it gets them a chance to live in a great place for less than a small suite in a hotel.
