A familiar face at Ocean House beach

Sam Fusaro started working at the Ocean House beach in 1966, and returned every summer until 2001. The owners of the newly rebuilt hotel have hired Fusaro as a full-time employee, giving a sense of continuity to the resort that debuted in Watch Hill in 1868.

What is the prettiest, most picturesqe beach town in all of Southern California?

Posted by admin on July 10th, 2010 and filed under beach | 5 Comments »

I’m envisioning a pretty, picture post-card town on the ocean with a nice public beach that lies anywhere between Santa Barbara and San Diego. A real beauty to the eye. Can you think of a California beach town that fits this description?

Depends on what your idea of a beach town is.

Del Mar, Hermosa Beach and Coronado are all very nice but somewhat upscale, so if that picture fits for you it works.

La Jolla isn’t really a "beach town" it’s much more of a resort for wealthy people that’s on the coast. It’s very pretty, but "beach town" doesn’t seem like the right description.

For a true "beach town" feeling, I think of a town that’s not as exclusive…more of a place where a middle class person would feel comfortable and fit in. If that’s your vision, check out Encinitas/Leucadia, which is more of a town…funky and pretty at the same time. Moonlight Beach is more of a community beach than a big name beach. Carlsbad is a bigger town version of an old fashion beach town.

One more town that’s very pretty but also very oriented to rich people is Laguna Beach.

So in summary, think of what type of feel you are looking for to decide what is your ideal.

How to measure Beach gradient with a clinometer and rulers?

Posted by admin on July 7th, 2010 and filed under beach | 1 Comment »

how would you measure the gradient of a beach with a clinometer and rulers, or even just a clinometer. if you could tell me in detail i would be very greatfull thanks.

The essential parts of a clinometer are a flat side, or base, on which it stands, and a hollow disk just half filled with some heavy liquid. The glass face of the disk is surrounded by a graduated scale that marks the angle at which the surface of the liquid stands, with reference to the flat base. The line 0.—0. being parallel to the base, when the liquid stands on that line, the flat side is horizontal; the line 90.—90. being perpendicular to the base, when the liquid stands on that line, the flat side is perpendicular or plumb. Intervening angles are marked, and, with the aid of simple conversion tables, the instrument indicates the rate of fall per set distance of horizontal measurement, and set distance of the sloping line.

Step
1

Position yourself at the required distance from the object you want to measure. The distance, referred to as the baseline distance, varies by clinometer type. For example, the baseline distance for a metric clinometer might be 15 meters.

Step
2

Hold the clinometer right-side up in one hand. The information printed on the lens in the clinometer only provides accurate information when you hold the clinometer right-side up, and the "up" side is indicated on the clinometer’s case.

Step
3

Look with one eye through the lens at the object you want to measure. The scale on the clinometer’s lens will be visually projected onto the object.

Step
4

Visually position the object against the scale displayed on the clinometer’s lens. Note the values on the scale for the base and top of the object. Using a metric clinometer to measure the height of a pole, you might observe that the base of the pole aligns with the number three on the clinometer lens’s scale and the top of the pole aligns with the number six.

Step
5

Subtract the bottom value from the top value to determine the height of the object in units based on your clinometer’s type. In this example, the top value for the pole is six and the bottom value is three. Subtracting six from three yields the measurement of three meters in height for the pole.

Anybody ever had a small wedding ceremony on a beach?

Posted by admin on July 4th, 2010 and filed under beach | 4 Comments »

My girlfriend is from Romania. She will be coming back to the states to be with me and we are planning on getting married. She always talks about the beach and everything. So, I thought maybe we could just go to the local county clerk to get the license, then drive down to the beach and get married. Her family of course is in Romania, so there really won’t be anyone from her side of the family, so we are probably going to keep it pretty small. Then maybe after we are married we can travel to Romania and show her family. Any ideas or tips about beach weddings? Thanks.

A girlfriend of mine had a beach wedding not so long ago, and let me tell you it was an interesting event! It was very simple- minister along with parents on each side and an additional witness on each side. I suppose these would have been considered a ‘bridesmaid’ and a groomsman had it been a larger affair.

Consider the tide! Especially if you’re going to have any ‘permanent’ fixtures set up for your wedding ceremony. Many people don’t consider things like tide and weather, especially if their party is small and casual. Are you having your reception on the beach too? That’d be awesome- maybe a bonfire. My girlfriend and her groom had a large dining table set up, and it was all decked out for this incredible reception dinner. She used this company she found online for many of her wedding decorations, and she had the cutest favors (great beach-themed stuff!). I have the site…they have the best prices too!

What is the best beach to visit in the Pawleys Island area for a family with a toddler?

Posted by admin on July 1st, 2010 and filed under beach | 1 Comment »

My husband and I are taking our 17 month-old to Pawleys Island, SC next week and I was wondering what the best beach was in the area. I’m looking for a nice, clean beach with not a lot of traffic. Also, we are staying about 2 miles from the ocean so it would be nice to have a parking area near the beach. Any suggestions?

I’ve never been to Pawleys Island, but if it’s anything like Kiawah Island, (further south) then you’re in luck. Three Best Beaches reports that Kiawah has gentle sloping sand so there isn’t a big drop off. Looks like plenty of beach, too. There are pictures and video on the site. Hope this helps.
